Those of you who have occasioned the Seattle open mic scene will know about this beautiful woman. Eva ran the Hopvine songwriter showcase for years before the wonderful Barbara Buckland took over this job. You have to admire anyone willing to give so much time towards supporting the community while trying to get there own projects off the ground. My hats off to Eva and Barbara both.
Eva has an incredible voice and as such she has sang with many other musicians in the area as duets, trios and more. So when I noticed She would be at the World Cup sharing the bill with Steve Wacker I had to go. (More on Steve at a later date but he’s a world-class songwriter as well)
The World Cup Espresso and Wine is a quaint comfortable shop located next door to Giggles on 52nd and Roosevelt. It carries a wonderful selection of wines and world class baristas. The floor is dotted with antique dark wood tables with chairs. The room has a georgious burgundy wall that is a gallery for local artists. On this occasion it was appropriate that another singer/songwriter Nancy Dillon’s artwork graced the wall.
On this night Eva was joined by two other musicians. Bill Dickerson Plays Acoustic guitar and backup vocals. Bill adds a great deal of embellishment to Eva’s songs through some marvelous lead lines. Bill has a good voice as well in adding vocal texture to Eva’s melodies. Mark Filler played various percussive instruments from a tongue drum to a sweet sounding Cajon. Mark found just the right groove and kept the texture evolving with each new sound he would add from a malleted ride to a tongue drum rhythmic line.
Over all this ambience of the room and the band soars this songbird who sings with comfort and ease and command of your attention. If you start with a plain piece of paper and fold it again and again until finally you have crafted a delicate paper crane, you may begin to understand the origami precision she uses to take a simple note and release it in flight lifted by the splendor of her smooth endlessly effortless voice. Her every gesture is focused of pulling out every ounce of vocal energy during her performance.
Yes, the Seattle music scene is alive and active with quality performers and Eva is a perfect example.
